Alex Sampson

Alex Sampson is a 22-year-old meth addict that lives with her equally addicted and dealer boyfriend, Mitch. Alex is a meek, timid, but intelligent woman who chooses to live vicariously through her addiction, guilt-free and without consequence. She has a tendency to allow herself to be walked over by Mitch, not necessarily because she is weak-minded, but rather because she has decided on the life she currently has and her place in it as the “drug dealer’s girlfriend”. When Alex learns about the pregnancy, her ability to ignore the state of her life and well-being become impossible. She is forced to ask herself whether she, in the conditions she has placed herself in, has the ability to raise a child and supply them with a life worth living. The sobering reality of falling pregnant ignites the strongest characteristics of Alex’s personality, traits which had laid dormant for years such as courage, passion, and a strong moral compass. While she tries to suppress these emotions at first, it soon becomes clear to Alex that something must change in her life and that this change must come directly from her.

Mitch

Mitch is Alex's 25-year-old drug addict and dealer boyfriend. Mitch is an outspoken, possessive, and arrogant man who’s goal is to rise through the ranks of the meth industry and eventually become a supplier instead of a street dealer. Despite his many flaws and inexcusable actions throughout the film, Mitch is a man who loves Alex and believes he wants the best for her. However, his version of this is her sticking by his side as they climb the ladder of drug distribution. Mitch is on the brink of being able to move away from the country town that he and Alex live in, and on to Sydney where they will be able to start making a much more luxurious income. Because of this, Mitch is on edge for the film and is hoping for stability and calmness as he prepares for their move. This is why when Alex begins to act strangely and distant to Mitch for reasons unbeknownst to him (The pregnancy), he is filled with anxiety and paranoia about her motives and reasoning behind her change.

Ivy and Her Dad

Ivy and her dad symbolise and give Alex a glimpse into what her life could be like if she got out of the drug business. This being that they are the confrontation of a stable and happy life. She could raise her unborn child in a safe environment away from the drugs... she could give herself and her unborn child the life they need and deserve.
